2007 Follow Up
Thank You Wilsonville

A father and his two kids drove south from Portland Saturday Aug. 4 to see whether Wilsonville would be a good community to move to or not.
They saw something “big and colorful” going on at Town Center Park.
After spending the entire afternoon at Fun in the Park, the kids were sold on Wilsonville and could hardly wait to get home to tell their Mom.
I proudly told the Dad that 166 different organizations participated in this 7th annual festival and the generosity of 21 sponsors and over 600 volunteers combined to make it a free gift to the community.
            He was impressed.
Thank you, Wilsonville, for embracing this wholesome, smile-generating collection of fun.
That dad was part of my random survey of about 100 families attending the festival, which revealed that just under half of the respondents lived in Wilsonville. About a quarter of those interviewed were invited by a friend or relative from the community.
“Veterans” of Fun in the Park were quick to label this “the best one yet.”
Consensus on the organizing committee was that it was also the most trouble free, thanks to wonderful cooperation of all involved in setting the “table” of Town Center Park and experienced volunteers embracing their chores with a smile.
Even as nearly 140 canopies were being stowed away in storage in relay fashion from trailer to storage one committee member didn’t want to pass by a teaching moment for his observant young daughter.
“Abbie, do you know what this is called?”
            “Teamwork” was her appropriate answer.
(One of the sweating servants wondered if maybe the answer should have been “slave labor,” but he said it with a smile and got an appropriate laugh).
            Teamwork with a smile.
That’s a good summation of nine months of planning and execution.
It wouldn’t happen without willing teammates lending time, treasure and talents.
Thanks to all who had a helping hand in the celebration of community and the testimony it heralds to visitors that this is a caring…and fun…place to live.

Gratefully on behalf of the organizing committee,
Bob Woodle, President
Fun in the Park 2007
